Create Your Own Door and Window Types
A clean set of project-specific door/window sizes and finishes, plus extra families loaded from the library and the leftovers purged.
- Duplicate an existing type instead of editing it directly:
- Select a placed door or window and click Edit Type in Properties.
- In the Type Properties dialog, click Duplicate….
- Name the new type by its size, e.g.
0900 x 2100mm— never leave the default name.
- Edit the dimensions:
- Still in Type Properties, change Width and Height under Dimensions.
- Click Apply and watch the model update — every instance of this type changes at once.
- Edit the materials:
- In Type Properties, find the Materials and Finishes group (e.g. Door Panel, Frame, Glass — names vary by family).
- Click the … button in the value field to open the Material Browser.
- Pick or duplicate a material, then click OK twice.
- Load additional families when the loaded ones aren't enough:
- Go to Insert → Load Family and browse the local metric library (e.g.
Doors,Windowsfolders), or use Insert → Load Autodesk Family to search Autodesk's cloud library. - Select the family and click Open / Load — it appears in the Project Browser under Families.
- Place it, then repeat steps 1–3 to create the exact types your project needs.
- Go to Insert → Load Family and browse the local metric library (e.g.
- Keep the file clean with Purge Unused:
- Go to Manage → Purge Unused.
- Click Check None, then tick only the door/window families and types you know are test leftovers.
- Click OK — unused types disappear from the Project Browser and the file size drops.
- Verify: open a door/window Schedule (or the Project Browser → Families branch) and confirm only intentional, well-named types remain.
Note: Type edits are global — changing a type's width resizes every instance in the project, so always Duplicate first; a disciplined type list is also what makes your door/window schedules readable to consultants.
